How much should you tip?
For sit-down restaurant service in the US, 15–20% is customary, with 18–20% now the common default for good service. Tipping is generally calculated on the pre-tax bill.
Tipping outside restaurants
Customary US tips vary by service: bartenders $1–2 a drink (or 15–20% of a tab), food delivery 15–20% with a $5 minimum, taxis and rideshare 10–15%, hairdressers and barbers 15–20%, and hotel housekeeping $3–5 per night left daily. A flat counter-service tip of 10% or a couple of dollars is optional but appreciated.
Splitting the bill fairly
Set “Split between” to your party size and the calculator divides the total including tip evenly. For an uneven split — where some people ordered far more — it is fairer to tip the same percentage on each person’s own subtotal rather than dividing the grand total in equal shares.
